Trump attacks German automakers, called them ‘very bad’
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump threatened to stop the selling of millions of German cars in the US. This statement came from his side during a meeting with the European officials in Brussels.
According to the US President, he would stop the selling of German automakers millions of cars in his homeland and called the Germans very bad. It is learned from the reports that Trump doesn’t want any German automaker to export their cars in the US.
Trump also threatened to impose an import tax on German cars in January 2017, i.e. 35 percent. This would cause serious troubles for German automakers to import their cars in the US.
BMW is one of the leading brands in the US and also has a manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The cars they build in Spartanburg are X3, X4, X5 and X6. According to the official reports, around 65% of the cars are exported overseas that are produced at the South Carolina facility of BMW. One thing that should be noticed that Trump referred the word bad to all German automakers, not just Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen.
Aside from BMW, another German automaker Volkswagen has their facilities in Chattanooga and Tennessee. Another popular automaker Mercedes-Benz has also their facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
For the German economy, car exports are known as the lifeblood. Moreover, the United States is an important market for their economy. It would be a serious threat, if New trade barriers imposed on them. This decision could sour the relations with between Germany and United States, who are also the most important allies.
