5th April, 2018 will be… Caramel Day
National Caramel Day is celebrated on the 5th of April each year. This day is all about appreciating the rich sweetness caramel brings in everyone’s lives. Caramels are created by adding fat as well as milk in a sugary syrup that is heated and stirred constantly until it becomes light brown. A wide number of candies, confections, and desserts are made with the help of caramel. Sometimes, caramel is used in flavoring ice creams, desserts, custards and many more things.
History of caramel:
This word is originally from the French language, which was actually taken from Spanish “caramelo” in the 1700s. But the farthest that the name can be traced is in the Portuguese language, most probably from late Latin “calamellus”, which stands for “sugar cane”, which itself comes from Greek. Some historians say it comes from medieval Latin “cannamella”, in which “canna” stands for “cane” and “mella” stands for “honey”. Caramel word is also connected to the Arabic language which is called “koramokhalla”, which stands for “a sweet ball”.
In the early 1600s, it has been said that candies were made by utilizing water and caramelized sugar by American women. It was also noted that this candy was quite economical to make. But everything changed when in the middle of 19th century, someone added fat and milk to a mixture of cooked sugar, which ultimately made a chewy, soft candy. After that, this candy swept through the world and was on the lips and tongues of every single person in more than a century because of Milton S. Hershey, whose first business was a Caramel Company in Lancaster.
