SC formed a Joint Investigation team to investigate the offshore business of PM family
On Friday, The Supreme Court of Pakistan formed a Joint Investigation team. The team consists of six-members to investigate the offshore business of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif family.
The investigation is in line with the verdict of April 20. The officials included as a part of inquiry team are:
- Brigadier Nauman Saeed (Inter-Services Intelligence)
- Brigadier Kamran Khurshid (Military Intelligence)
- Aamer Aziz (State Bank of Pakistan)
- Bilal Rasool (Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan)
- Irfan Naeem Mangi (National Accountability Bureau)
- Wajid Zia (Federal Investigation Agency)
An FIA director will head the whole team and has to submit the final report within the next 60 days.
The JIT is directed to commence the investigation and after completion, they must have to submit it. The process also includes the submission of fortnightly progress reports. This order is issued by the apex court’s special bench of three judges. The bench is constituted by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, The objective of the investigation is implementing the verdict of Supreme Court.
The next hearing is scheduled for May 22 and JIT is directed to submit their fortnightly reports. The 11.5 million documents in the Panama papers showed that the PM family have secreted their money in the offshore businesses. In the verdict, the Supreme Court declared that PM and his family failed to justify their assets in the offshore holdings.
The JIT shall be provided facilities such as adequate office accommodation, according to the order of Apex Court. According to the court, they shall be formed in the Federal Judicial Academy, Islamabad. The court also ordered an initial amount Rs. 20 million to the JIT head and ordered the government to provide the team with the necessary funds.
The JIT members and head shall arrange the secretarial staff of their choice. According to the order, they would be at the liberty to utilize their expertise available in their own departments as well as in other federal and provincial government departments. The order added that all executive authorities shall aid JIT throughout the whole process.
